Growing up my favorite place to be was alone in the forests around my neighborhood. Pretending to be in Middle Earth or in my favorite video games, the trees had my imagination running wild.
Now as an adult I still get that sense of peace and magic that I used to chase as a kid. Whether the in the woods by my home or across the country in strange forests, the trees produce a sense of wonder and quiet bliss.

One of my favorite things to photograph is a waterfall. Cascading rivers falling to create a thunderous crash below only to smooth back out into the calm river again is something we all relate to in life.

I have this draw to the ocean that I can’t explain. On one hand I’m afraid of what lies hiding just below the surface, the immense power it has and the fact that I never learned to swim.
On the other, the ocean has immeasurable beauty and a sense of calm that I always miss once I drive home.

One thing I really don’t like is being hot. I much prefer the cooler temperatures and crisp air we get in the Northeast around autumn to the brutally hot heat in the Southwest. The one thing that is worth putting yourself in that uncomfortable place is the sands and rock formations. Deep canyons, swirling sands and towering pillars of rock is like being on a different planet and its worth the mild dehydration to see.

Sometimes getting a wide view of a scene doesn’t work out the way you hoped. The forests can be messy, the light is too harsh or things just aren’t feeling right. In those times I like to find little subjects that are often overlooked or ignored.

My all time favorite place to shoot photos at is the mountains. The majestic peaks rising high above is a great sight. Being at the base of a 14.000 foot mountain really makes me feel small and unimportant. Sometimes the reminder that life is short and temporary in comparison to how long those peaks have been there.

The main reason I got into landscape and nature photography is to get away from people. The loud sounds, rude behavior and smell of pollution is not where I like to be. I prefer things to remain the way they are in nature without buildings and structures to ruin it. But sometimes a small human made thing hides tucked away that can lend a little extra beauty to a scene.

Photographing the little textures and patterns of an area always opens up more possible images when going to a scene. After shooting the sunrise at the beach I start looking down for ripples and designs in the sand. After shooting the trees in the forest I look for leaves and little plants. Most of the time I come away enjoying the little things than the larger scenes.

In 2022 I purchased an old Nikon FG camera to play around with. I primarily shoot digital but wanted something small to carry around and take images that had a look that matched around the year I was born.
Its interesting to see the clear high quality images that come out of my digital camera versus the grainy not so perfect film images.
